I have a 1970 El Camino and the left side of the tailgate and jamb don't line up right. It's too close at the bottom and too far apart at the top. The other side is fine however. How could I fix this? It needs new quarters so I could fix it then but how? Also, the bed cover in the front of the bed is held on with only 4 bolts. Is there supposed to be more screws or something holding it on? Thanks!

First let me address the question about the front bed floor. It is only held down by the 4 bolts that you metioned. However there is what appears to be some sort of adheasive or sealant along the bottom of the panal. Mine was a brownish orange color. I used 3m all-around body sealant as the adheasive and then when I was ready, I recaulked the rest of the bed with this also. The prob. with your tailgate could be from a factory screw-up, bent hinge or a remenant of an accident before you got it.

It might be from an accident because I can tell that the quarter panel on that side was replaced once. It might also be a hinge problem because I noticed that the passenger's side hinge is welded but I don't think it's from that. How could this problem be fixed?

I've noticed the same thing on my 66 Elco and blame it on racing with the tailgate down. I think this may allow the bed sides to spread at the top when the frame torques up during a launch. The tailgate may help to hold everything square. I've considered making a turnbuckle that would let me slowly tighten and bring everything back into alignment.
