Getting ready to replace the idler arm seals in my 68's steering box. I found out that the previous owner "kinked over" the return line tube at the pump. I think this is why the seals blew out. Question: I've been able to bend out most of the kink but not all.... anything to worry about? Ya think I can run it this way? If not.... anybody got any ideas on straightening this bugger out? Would really hate to search for a new pump! Thanks.

Use a piece of tubing over the tube out of the pump and work slowly keep checking it.Failing that, go get another resvoir no need to change the whole pump.Idler arm seals??Maybe you mean pitman shaft seals??...FRED

Fred, pitman shaft is right.... brain fade!
Thanks, I'll try the tube idea. Didn't even
think of a new reservoir... think I can find one easily? Thanks again.

Isnt the return tube off the box just a piece of steel tubing? I cant remember the diameter, but you could get a small section at the parts store, bend it and double flare one end to make a new one if yours is badly bent or cracks when you bend it back into shape.

Check with an alginment shop for a reservior.
These tubes are furnace welded and would be hard the replace...FRED

Fred/drptop70ss: Got it! Your tube idea worked well! I had to do some minor surgery with a pair of pliers to open up the tube some more after I got it straight. Looks good. Now on to the pitman seals. Thanks guys.

A little trick to getting the pitman seals out is to remove the arm, remove the snap ring, start the car and turn the steering wheel to full stop and the oil will push them out. Its a little messy but the easiest way to do it on the car. The other way is to center the steering, take the 4 bolts off the aluminum cap (you don't have to loosen the adjustment screw), lift out the cap with the pitman shaft and drive the seals out from the top. From the inside to the outside you will find the bearing, inner seal, washer, outer seal, washer, dust cover (on some) and then the snap ring.
