: Air leak behind dash
TDobrick Dec 22nd, 98, 3:38 PM Here's one I haven't seen before...
Just bought my '71 SS 12/11 and haven't been behind the dash yet, but here's the problem: there's a tornado of wind coming out from behind/under the dash. It increases in velocity with vehicle speed (not fan speed) to the point that here in Minnesota in December I drive with a wool Army blanket on my lap. Before I go tearing out the dash, i wanted to know what you think I should look for - for example, would it be common for some vent switch to be stuck open or something? Any help is appreciated...

Are you sure that the under dash vents are closed? I have been known to cruise around for a couple of days feezing my a** off after the weather turns cold until I realize that they are still open from summer cruising. Just something to check before tearing the dash apart.

283v8 Dec 23rd, 98, 4:26 AM I would check the operation of the "flaps" in the ductwork. Even with the fan off, if the flaps are not properly closed, air will be pushed in. Also; are the fresh air vents in the kick panels closing fully (if a 71 has these).
If all that is OK, check for holes (cut or rust) and whether penetrations are sealed around speedo cable etc.
How about air coming in at floor console and under carpet??
