Shouldnt the temp and gen idiot lights come one while cranking the engine? What happens if they dont. Or they didnt when I bought the car (3 months ago). Gen light came on for about a week straight during start up and has never appeared again. And the temp light now comes on sometimes while cranking, but it rarely does.

LUKE DUKE SS, Generally, the temp light comes on when you crank the engine, as a test for the light. What happens is that the ignition switch grounds the circuit momentarily and turns the light on, I think the gen light should come on when you turn the ign on. I dont know what year your car is, but the brake system warning light may also come on when you crank the engine. Give us some info so we can give you more help. As John Corbin said, you should check the bulbs.

Sorry, my car is a 68 Malibu, and the only gauge is the speedo, and then oil, temperature and generator lights.

oil and generator should come on when ignition is on and engine not running, temp should light when cranking.

On my 70 Malibu, the Temp and Oil light come on when the ign is turned on, then when the ign is turned to the start position, the Hot light comes on also. Every thing goes off when the engine starts.

on my 66 the temp light is stuck on and the gen light comes on when i crank it but the other idiot light next to the tmp never has come on. does your high beam light come on? i am guessing u have same idiot lights as i do should be next to gen and says BRIGHT.
