If anyone out there has any
info pertaining to the questions below, I would greatly appreciate it
since I have been getting some conflicting information.

1.
Someone sent me some '70-'72 data for Monte Carlo.
I've never seen most of this data before. Is this accurate ?

1970 454 - 3823 cars (all TH-400) <This I've seen before>
1970 402 - 7956 cars (589 of these M20)
1970 small-block 4-speed - 839 cars
1970 L65 3-speed manual - ?
1970 Powerglide ?

1971 454 - 1919 cars (all TH-400) <I've seen this figure before, but some sources claim 1772>
1971 402 - 8633 cars (269 of these M20)
1971 L48 4-speed - 269 cars
1971 3-speed manual ?
1971 Powerglide ?

1972 454 - 1268 cars
1972 402 - 9960 cars

All '72s were automatics. Exports to Canada not included for '72

2.
The Cowl Induction option was available on the SS-396 and SS-454 in '70. No mystery there.
Chevrolet materials state that for '71-'72, Cowl Induction was only available with the 454.
However, some people claim that you could have it with a 402 (one person claims to have
a build sheet listing LS3 and ZL2, but I have not seen it). Was Cowl Induction factory
installed on some LS3s ? How about 350s ?

3.
On the '68-'70 L78 and L89, I know that only 4-speeds were available. Certainly, the
M22 and probably the M21 as well. But, I have not been able to verify if the M20 was
also available with the L78/L89. Was it ?

Thanks for any info !

DCARR,

The production numbers you are quoting for the '70 and '71 454 equiped Monte's are actually the production figures for the RPO Z20 SS Package. This is born out with the discrepency you cited between the '71 figures. 1,919 Z20 M/Cs were built. 1,772 M/Cs got the 454 engine.

Dan,

1)I can't find them right now (I've looked) but I have some Monte Carlo L65/3-spd. figures for the '70 - '72. I remember that Chevy still offered a 3-spd in '73 - '75, but none were built. They were on a special low-price version with bias-plys (I kid you not) and no high-caster front-end geometry.

2) Never say never, but according to Terry Boyce 'Super Sports 1961 - 1976' he states that cowl induction was offered on the Heavy Chevy when the 402 was ordered. It would not come with hood stripes (as was the case for cowl induction SSs in '72). I'm sure that if you knew the right people you could have it your way, but from what I've gleaned cowl induction wasn't available with the small block.

3) Actually in '69 & '70 a special TH400 was offered behind ALL solid-lifter big blocks, even L88s. It had a 2400 rpm stall and would upshift as high as 6200 rpm when left in drive, according to the late Roger Huntington.

I'll see if I can unearth the 3 speed #s. I think they were in an issue of Super Chevy from the '80s.

Oops! I meant to say that stripes were no longer included as standard with the cowl induction hood on SSs. Also, I can't confirm or deny this (I could be mistaken), but I personally believe that it was possible to get an M20 Muncie with the L78 & L89, but the solid lifter 396s were better suited to the close-ratio trans and high 3's and 4-series gears. If you special-ordered a tall ratio (3.55 or lower numerically) then the wide ratio might make better sense, depending on how the car was to be used. The M20 Muncie has the same torque load capacity as the M21. The M22 is another story.

Here's the 3 speed totals: '70 - 545; '71 - 280; '72 - 342.

The '70 4-spd. total production was 1428, which fits your extropolated figures.

For '71 I found only 349 total 4-spds.

I'm quoting these figures from 'Cars & Parts - Musclecars of the 60s & 70s', which sourced these figures from 'Chevrolet Production Figures and Totals - By The Book 1953-91', which sourced directly from Chevrolet.

I've also read that Chevy offered redline tires on the Monte Carlo in '70 only, and that only 170 were so equipped.
