What would you consider a fair price to pay a junk yard for a 454 long block?

Michael, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500. to $1000. Make sure you have "ALL"
the brackets for alternator/power steering and the pulleys and air cleaner. All this stuff will aid in determining price. Rick..
Oh! One more thing, see if you can hear it run and you know it hasn't been sitting outside uncovered for awhile.

Michael, Instead of getting a junk yard motor, you might try scanning the area of your paper where they sell the "cheap" cars. You can usually find an old chevy rustbucket w/big block for 400-1000. Pull the motor, tranny and any other parts you want and junk the vehicle. That way you know it runs, you may have a workable tranny and all the brackets/clamps/hoses that you could need.
Good luck. Jeff

Are you on the east or west coast. Us guys on the Northeastern shores have it good because 454's are somewhat plentiful. Many of the GM workhorse trucks came with em and after these plowtrucks rusted out, they were parked. Around here in the northeast, $450 is top dollar. Prices average $350 to $450. But I scored one 2 years ago for $150 complete. Lucky me.

Same here in the rust belt. You can get a running 454 for around $500.

Before you decide to do a fat block, decide what it is that you want. Granted, big block's can generate more power than small blocks, but it costs twice as much to do it. My advice is if you are looking for a 13 to low 11 second car, stick with the small block. Anything faster, think about going with the big block. Just remember, big blocks take serious $$$$ to build.

Columbus (ohio) Dispatch classifieds has a rebuildable 454 for 600 dollars and two good condition 454 engines for 1400 each. Seems like a lot to me, but I'm not up on big blocks. tom
