: Can there be too much EOS in the oiling system?

Am going to fire up and break-in my 454 next week. I am going to have a four quart oil pan and run a 2-quart filter, per reccomendation. I was thinking maybe for break-in running 4 quarts of a good weight oil that is made with a high zinc content, and then 2 quarts of EOS. Maybe I'm just really paranoid. Would that be too much?

I would not use more then whats recommended. Valvetrain interference and excessive cranking to first start the engine are the biggest cam killers. Make sure you have checked all of your valvetrain clearances and when in doubt check again, prime oil system, fill bowls with fuel, install distributor and start it. and bring the RPMs up to 2500 or so right away. Your cam will thank you. Also double check all of your fluid connections the day before you get ready to start it, nothing worse than having leaks that might interrupt the cam breakin process.

TWO QUARTS of EOS??? Are you that rich? The local rape-job GM dealer gets near $10 for a pint bottle. That'd be $40 plus the oil, and you're going to dump it after breaking in the cam and making all the "tune-up" adjustments--less than an hour's running time.

I use ONE bottle and 15W40 diesel/spark rated motor oil. (Shell Rotella)

Taylor,

I used 1 bottle (pint) of EOS along with 5W30 Shell oil (forget what it was called but it did have a higher zinc content) when I did my cam sawp (solid flat tappet). Then again, I also used those nifty oil bleed lifters cuz I was paranoid. Engine fired immediately, no problems.

I didn't realize the bottles were in pints, thought they were quarts. If they're pints then it's a different story, so I will probably only get one.

The directions on the bottle state up to two bottles of EOS can be added to the crankcase. The bottles are 16 oz.
