: OIL MESS
1BLACKHARLEY Apr 17th, 03, 12:48 PM AFTER REPLACING REAR MAIN AND VALVECOVER GASKETS I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM. MY S.B. WITH BILLET TYPE VALVE COVERS. HAS PVC VALVE. BOTH VALVE COVERS HAVE RUBBR GROUMETS IN THEM. UNDER ACCELERATION THE GROUMETS LEAK OIL, WHICH POOLS IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD VALLEYS.THE HOLES FOR THE GROUMETS ARE ROUND, WITHOUT CUT OUTS FOR BREATHERS. WHAT CAN I DO TO CLEAN THIS UP? OBVIOUSLY, IF I ACCELERATE HARD OR CORNER HARD THE OIL POOLING IN THE VALLEYS, RUNS DOWN ONTO THE EXHAUST. IS THERE A WAY TO REMEDY THIS WITHOUT REPLACING THE VALVE COVERS WITH BREATHER TYPE? DO I HAVE A CLUE AS TO WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?
Midnight Marauder Apr 17th, 03, 1:06 PM Im kind of confused. You say the holes are round without cutouts but you have grommets and breathers installed? One breather in pass head and PCV in driver side? Outside of my confusion I am inclined to think you dont have baffles under either hole punched in your valve covers. I think moroso makes baffle kits that can be tack welded to the inside of the valve cover to heep oil from splashing up against the bottom of the breather / grommet and PCV. I think Mr. Gasket makes them as well. Sounds like an awful lot of oil for just seeping past the grommet / breather and PCV grommet. Have you tried getting new grommets of larger diameter?
1BLACKHARLEY Apr 17th, 03, 1:27 PM PVC IS IN PASSENGER SIDE, SLID INTO A HOLLOW RUBBER GROUMET, DRIVER SIDE HAS A SOLID RUBBER GROUMET. WHEN I SAY WITH NO CUT OUTS, I MEAN THERE ARE HOLES, BUT NOT WITH THE NOTCHES TO PUT IN OLD STYLE BREATHERS. I HAVEN'T EVEN OWNED A CAR IN ABOUT 8 YEARS, AND IT LOOKS LIKE LOTS OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED, EVEN IN THE OLDER STUFF. YOU GUYS CONTINUE TO BE A GREAT WELL OF KNOWLEDGE, AND I APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP.
So if I read things right you remember seeing the twist in breathers and your covers are not notched for them... The push in gromets are actually older than the twist in stuff but ery common today. Beaux has you going in the right direction, a baffle under the hole in the valve cover would slow down any oil finding it's way out from around the gromets. Check with your local speed shop for a baffle/breather that takes the place of the rubber gromets. They use the existing hole and can come with a breather or fitting for PCV. You place the baffle under the valve cover and into the hole and the keeper goes on from the top.

Might want to enlarge the diameter of the holes in your valve cover, thus getting rid of the notches for the screw in type and then use a larger diameter grommet than you have now and put the breather and PCV back in.
-edit- but you should baffle them either way
1BLACKHARLEY Apr 17th, 03, 4:41 PM THANKS GUYS, I APPRECIATE THE HELP. I WILL EITHER GET BAFFLES OR USE THIS AS AN EXCUSE TO GET COOLER LOOKING VALVE COVERS. I SEE KRINKLE BLACK IS COMING AROUND AGAIN, I'VE SEEN SOME PRETTY COOL ONES LATELY. THANKS AGAIN.

Just as an FYI... Please turn off the CAPS LOCK, it means YOU'RE YELLING! Plus, it's hard to read!
Anyway, this sounds similiar to a problem I had with some older Mickey Thompson valve covers... they has the large holes for the twist-in cap caps. One cap was solid and one had a smaller hole for PCV valve... is that like what you have? Sounds like you have a PCV valve on one side and just a rubber cap on the other side?
Sad to say, but I think replacing the valve covers with some baffled ones is the first step! There are a few different baffling 'gimmicks' that you could try, but none of them work real good IMO. You might also try installing a breather in the side with just the cap to help ease some of the pressure in the crank-case.
The other thing that bothered me was you saying that the oil is pooling on the intake manifold. Typically, the oil from the valve cover holes will not go to the intake unless you have some funky covers! The valve covers actually tilt 'out' towards the exhaust manifolds, so the oil will run down the valve covers and onto the exhaust manifolds. If you are getting oil pooling on the manifold, I suspect it's seeping up from the intake manifold bolt holes. That is pretty common, just means someone didn't seal the bolts well when they installed them. You can pull them out one-by-one and clean them, install some sealer, then re-install. Again, this problem is compounded when the pressure builds up in the crank case.
Good luck,
Bill C.
1BLACKHARLEY Apr 22nd, 03, 11:19 AM I'VE ALMOST HAVE ALL THE OIL LEAKS CONQUERED. SOME OF YOU AND THE LOCAL SPEED SHOP, SAY I SHOULD RESEAL THE INTAKE BOLTS. WHAT SHOULD I USE FOR SEAL (THREADS ONLY?) AND WHAT SHOULD I USE FOR TORQUE SETTING. THANKS GUYS, YOU HAVE BEEN A TREMENDOUS HELP IN FIXING THE HACK JOB, THE PREVIOUS OWNERS HAVE DONE TO THIS POOR ABUSED ELKY. THANKS TO YOU GUYS, SHE IS ACTUALLY RUNNING PRETTY STRONG.

1BLACKHARLEY May 1st, 03, 11:04 AM THANKS GUYS, I RESEALED THE INTAKE LAST NIGHT. I HAD FORGOT HOW REFRESHING BRAKE KLEEN WAS ON OPEN WOUNDS. I NEVER LIKED THE LINKAGE SET UP ON THE CARB. AFTER REMOVING THE A/C BRACKET, I FOUND PROPER LINKAGE ROLLIING AROUND THE INTAKE VALLEYS. I INSTALLED THE PROPER LINKAGE, ONLY TO REALIZE IT DIDN'T CLEAR THE A/C BRACKET. MY CURRENT WIFE HAS NO INKLING OF MY AUTOMOTIVE PAST. THE LOOK ON HER FACE WHEN I ASKED FOR A PLASTIC BAG AND A RUBBER BAND WAS PRETTY FUNNY. THEN I DRILLED CLEARANCE FOR THE LINKAGE. WORKS GREAT. THEN SHE REALLY THOUGHT I FLIPPED WHEN SHE SAW ME BLOWING OUT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WITH THE LEAF BLOWER.ANY WAY ABOUT 10:45 LAST NIGHT I BUTTONED EVERYTHING UP. NO LEAKS ANYWHERE. I ALSO TOOK THE OPPRITUNITY TO RETIME, AND ADJUST THE CARB. COUDN'T BELIEVE HOW WELL IT RAN ON THE WAY TO WORK. ALSO SAVED MYSELF ABOUT $350 IN LABOR. HMMMM, MAYBE SOME NEW DOOR PANELS NEXT. THANKS AGAIN.
Midnight Marauder May 1st, 03, 11:11 AM Sweet. Classic, blowing out the engine compartment with a leaf blower.....WAY TO BE! Personally, I just reverse flow on my shopvac and use it much the same way. :D
Also, very cool that you came back to let the guys know how it worked out. Lots o times we dont here the results as we all tend to get wrapped up in the project and forget the "hey, yeah it worked" part.
Gotta love it when a plan comes together.
