: '68 427 Block, Oil Pressure Sending location?

'68, 427, 4 bolt main, Hi-Per Pass block. This motor is going into a '69 factory gauge car, while original block is going into a plastic bag, while car is in "heavy play" mode.

Going to try to use existing gauge, but hang a mechanical oil pressure gauge under dash somewhere, so two sending units needed. Engine guy tells me I can use a "T" with no problem. Lots of posts on oil pressure sending unit locations. Can't find anything that matches this engine.

The only place I can find is that it has two LARGE factory threaded holes (one larger than the other) over the filter. He says it would make a great place to run a cooler, but I'm not going to do that. The '69 sending unit female is swallowed by these holes. Do they make a "reducer" to get the hole small enough to hold the sending unit (Or actually the "T")? I assume they make plugs big enough to fit into the other hole. The block has a series of (5/16-3/8"?) holes at bottom of block on each side just above oil pan. These are plugged and he doesn't think they'd be right for the sending unit. I don't have a clue what the motor came out of as the stamping was almost gone before it was decked.

Any help on where the sending unit might go?

I just plumbed a manual copper tubing line/gage on my 66 396. You are correct the HP 427 will have two ports above the filter, the rear port is where a stock factory sending unit would go. Simply install a pipe standard thread plug in the front one which was for an oil cooler. If I may ask is this a 4 speed car or automatic? The reason I am ask is because on my 66 I tried to use the SB original Z-bar and it will hit the fitting for my oil line. If you are interested in how and what I used to do mine just shoot me an e-mail, will be glad to tell you, all the items can be purchased at any ACE Hardware Store I would think, that is where I got mine. Good luck. PS, the plugs along the bottom of the block are oil gallery passage way plugs, I believe I would leave them along. Perhaps someone else will expand on this.

I sent you an email on what I've got. (yes, 4 speed) The engine guy also told me to leave the passage way holes alone.

Guess I've also got to figure out which ones are water drain holes as well. Probably wouldn't be too smart to put an oil pressure sending unit in the block's water jacket....

I used the front hole just behind my power steering pump and ran copper line to an after market guage. I also have a 4-speed and it was extremely close to the z-bar.

I went through this situation on my 66 BB with 4 spd.Yes the Z bar will hit as previously mentioned,so I plugged this hole and ran copper tubing from gauge along the pan rail on driverside and connected it to a oil plug at the D.S lower front next to the timing cover. It took one fitting to go in block;than the line fitting threaded into it.Works primo.you'll have to take the plug out of the front first which I beleive was an allen plug then buy the correct fitting so you can connect the oil line. This copper setup was actually easier to work with than the plastic line as it stays the way you bend itplus it won't melt. Hope this helps.Tony

Is the plug the one that is actually on FRONT of block (facing fan/radiator)?

Thanks.

The plug is the very front left side of the block closest to the oil pan.,I use the same one for my 1/4" line gauge that goes to the inside of the car.I use the rear left side port for the under the hood gauge(over the filter).

Jesse,
I assume you had to purchase the correct BBC Z-bar. I'm about to do this on my 67. Can you shoot me an email on parts you used?
Thanks
