YenkoChevelle69 Feb 2nd, 03, 11:42 PM For 100 bucks? You better bet your butt on it. But offer him 75, tell him to keep the head and see what he says.

70L34 Feb 3rd, 03, 12:39 AM Dude, just buy the whole deal. If the 074 head is good, it's easily worth a couple hundred dollars. Will he throw the other head in the deal for $125? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

It's costs around $120 per cylinder to resleeve.

MalibuDreamer Feb 3rd, 03, 7:02 AM if all cylinders need to be sleeved - you couldn't give me that block, and heads were meant to be sold in pairs. Just my .02

427L88 Feb 3rd, 03, 10:35 AM The 074 heads tend to blow up good, or blow up so many times that folks dont want to weld them again. You do see many on Ebay as singles, 200-300 or so. More if its virgin adn mint, which, by context, it doesnt seem likely to be.
engineguy Feb 3rd, 03, 11:02 AM A 427 block is worth a lot, especially to a restorer who is looking for numbers-matching parts. If ALL (or several of) the cylinders NEED to be sleeved, then there may be some serious damage to the block, depending on the source of the problem, such as crankshaft exiting through the pan. All of the cylinders CAN be resleeved and was done regularly at one time to make big blocks capable of bore diameters of 4.350" and larger, back before the advent of Bow-tie blocks and 502" engines.

David Bates Feb 3rd, 03, 12:26 PM I wasn't aware that the GM "074" heads have a history of blowing up! Maybe they were stressed beyond their design limitations, eg: very high spring pressures/lift breaking rocker stud bosses or lean runs burning exhaust seats etc. but blowing up? That's reaching a little wouldn't you say? Keep in mind that most of these heads are 30+ years old and have been subjected to a lot of thrashing over the years. Granted, they aren't as durable as an iron head but for the average person they are just fine and have a certain amount of "wow" value.
A virgin (unbutchered), 1969 dated set of 3946074 heads will bring in excess of $1500.00 and an NOS set over $3000.00!

427L88 Feb 3rd, 03, 12:29 PM David, yes, apologize, "blowing up" was inaccurate. Just needing much welding is what I meant. I do see singles up on Ebay frequently. And some dreadfully messed up pairs.
69SSpost Feb 3rd, 03, 1:10 PM Well the block really only needs two sleeves but is bored .060 over, and the head is ported ,I wish the other head was still around.
1ss427 Feb 3rd, 03, 2:24 PM dave bates,
What is a set of unbutcherd 69 840 cast heads worth? rectangle port close chamberd.
David Bates Feb 3rd, 03, 5:43 PM 1SS427,
A good set of 840 heads will bring anywhere from $200.00 up to "unreasonable" amounts if the date codes fall in early 1969 (COPO candidates). By the time you have them checked for cracks, install hardened exhaust seats (unless they've already been done), sixteen new stainless valves, valve job, seals etc. you're looking at $800.00 complete.
It seems that eBay is a great vehicle for unloading sorely abused performance parts of all kinds ("074" heads are a good case in point). For the most part, unless you know to ask ALL the right questions and don't rely solely on the posted photos and the sellers description, you stand the likelyhood of becoming an eBay victim (been there, done that - new 4.10's that turned out to be 4.56's for a 3-series carrier)! There is no substitute for having the item in your hands to judge for yourself. Should you get caught up in a scam, you are often at the mercy of the seller's sense of fairness. All he has to do is disavow any knowledge of the problem, blame it on shipping, or tell you "well shucks, you didn't ask me that!!!" or something similar.
