Ok, we changed the cam, lifters and pushrods in a 396BB. Put everything back together, adjusted the hydraulic lifters from the directions from crane. We got it started today and ran it for about 20 mins. Now it sounds like I am getting noise from the rockers on the passenger side again! IT has hydraulic lifters and roller rockers. Does anyone have any idea what might have happened? I thought once you adjusted the lifters you did not have to do it again. Thanks for any help in advance. :(

carefully re-adjust only go a 1/4 turn, and from what i'm told roller rockers tick

Should I back them off and then go a quarter turn? or go a quarter turn now. Sorry so many questions. Thanks

I think it's fairly common for the rocker arms to lose a little lash after a break-in. Even on a hydraulic. I would start it up again to get the engine warm and get the lifters pumped up...and then I would set them again. Sometimes it takes a couple of times to get them to "take a set".

I wouldn't freak out. Just give it a shot and see what happens. If it's starts gettin REALLY noisy and you feel like something is wrong, shut it down immediately and holler back with what's up. Good luck!

Oh, I just realized you have roller rockers. Chances are you will have a slight ticking sound, but it should be constant from both sides of the engine.

Well not to scare you, but on my friends 350 he had a comp magnum 280 hydraulic with roller tip rocker arms, there was always a lout tack-tack-tacck coming from one valve cover, we thought it was the lifter so we changed them with no luck, when we took off the heads weeks later to put on new ones, we noticed on of the ring lands was busted on the piston! good luck!

Make sure the rocker is not coming in contact with the valve cover anywhere also.

What him said , on some occassions they(roller rockers) do rub the valve covers, but to adjust them with the motor off , which is how i like to do it , make sure the motor is all the way cooled down, then back them all off and start over, and go your 1/4 turn, you can look in your Haynes or Chiltons manual and set them as instructed, but only a 1/4 turn, Good Luck my man !!!

I always need to re-adjust a couple times to get things quite. Performance cams seem to need a bit more attention than stock cams that use a full turn of preload.

Do you think your header gasket leak might be the source of all the noise? Just a thought. I've been fooled by an exhaust leak more than once.

I thought so at first chad (while sitting in the car) but going to engine compartment can hear the two seperate noises. It was a thought at the beginning.

Just an update, today started the BB and there was still a rocker noise. Ran it for a while(hour or so) and the rockers quieted down. Now just have to fix the exhaust leak. Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions.
