so we pulled a 307 out of my friend's car. i have some questions.

first, what would cause the oil to become "caked on" to the whole lifter valley and top of heads? would that just be because he didnt change the oil often? the TEMP light on his dash came on once or twice, would that cause it?

also, im wondering if this 307 is a stock un-rebuilt 307. (its the one that came in his car originally). the piston tops have G stamped on some and H stamped on others. could these be the originals that GM used? (my uncle's calipers read close to 3.875).

It's likely never been rebuilt.

Getting back to the oil question: Back in the old days the oils weren't as good. It tended to turn to that black "coke" substance in certain areas, especially if the oil wasn't changed regularly. If you want to see something really amazing, pull off the oil splash guard on the bottom of the intake. Probably huge chunks of that burned up oil residue. Don't forget to put the shield back on.

Unc,

Pick up a copy of Doug Roe's Q-Jet Book at Barnes & Noble or Amazon! Think it might help you out b/c it's a good one on them.

Kinda like this one?

This was the 305 in my cousin's 88 Monte Carlo. It had 265,000 on it and for the last 80,000 it was never maintained the way it should have been.

haha, worse than that, i can still see some metal on the lifter valley on the 305. 307 was just frosted with old oil. anyone have any idea how some pieces of zip-ties ended up in the lifter valley? weird.
