Any recomendations on camshaft for a 454 with stock heads (casting #346236 small oval port open chamber) My CR is probably 8-8.5:1. Looking for the biggest stick I can get without tearing up the valve trane. Looking for that "lopy" sound.
Thanks

Unfortunately, the kind of cams that give the lopey sound also bleed cylinder pressure, which isn't really all that good at 8.5:1

Heck, save yourself the hassle and money and when cruising around the local Burger-bar, just pull #3 sparkplug wire off and drive like you have the baddest cam ever!!

And it helps to do a bunch of posing while doing this!!

And I am serious as a heart attack here!!!
And I say this b/c it is too, fun to act like you are a player, but aren't...

That's why I used ta make all the noise I could with my car when I was a youngster..

Heck, 3/4 of the kids won't know the diff. nowadays anyway... But one of us old gearheads sure will!! He, He!!!

Ouch!! Get rid of the "peanut port" heads and look around for some "781" or "049" open chamber heads. Get a Comp Magnum 280H cam or something along those lines and you won't have to fake it. :D Those heads should be fairly easy to round up...... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Or better yet ( if you want to swap heads ) find some old closed chamber castings, which should yield 9-9.25:1 compression.

Go with a short duration 110 lsa cam in your case.( ex. 210/210, .500/ 110 lsa) If you go any lumpier, the thing will be a stone. If you swap heads to give you more compression, you can go with a bit more cam.

If you stay with your current set up,the Crane 272H will work fine with your low compression, and have a slight lope to it..the specs are 216 duration @ .050 .515/.515 112 LSA
I've run this cam in a low compression 402 and a 454,and with 3.31 gears and a 4 speed,they where both a blast to drive.Sounds nice too,especially with headers.

I bought a 454 with the peanut ports on it and from all the feedback I got from TC told me to find some heads that will breathe. I now have a set of "781" open chambers. You will be able to blast out of the hole with the heads you have now, but then you're starved for air and then no more go. Those "236" heads were apparently designed for trucks and RV's to obtain low end torque. The closed chamber heads will be fine also as the guys said and with any number of cams, but the point is to let that motor breathe. :D
