it shouldn't. i think it's just pretty much diesel fuel. i find it easier to just head up to the car wash and use the hight pressure hot water to clean your engine instead of spraying a cleaner on at trying to hose it off with cold water from a garden hose.

Gunk won't damage crome parts, but if you have anything that is polished aluminum, you might want to cover it up. If you get Gunk on the polished aluminum, it will spot, and good luck trying to get these spots out unless you take off the part and use a bench polisher (I speak from a personal experience). However, I do second the Gunk Foamy Engine Brite at the Car wash, it will take off most build up. You might try Castrol Superclean, that stuff works great for engine cleaning, driveway degreasing, won't damage paint or aluminum, and is also biodegradeable.

You might want to try something more mild (Castrol Superclean, Simple Green). Gunk is pretty powerful stuff. You can always try a little in an unseen area, but as others mentioned (myself included): Gunk shouldn't damage chrome. Where your valve covers polished aluminum? There are two products that I can think of that you might try, both are mothers products: Billet Polish and their all metal polish. Give these two a shot, if they won't take off the spots, then you might have to look into bench polishing.

Purple power,Castrol Superclean, Simple Green will all spot aluminum. It will take every bit of shine away. It'll leave you will a white haze,it looks like powder but it won't wash off.

Be careful with the Castrol because it will take all of your anodizing right off in seconds. I ruined my Moroso extra tall valve covers with it. I stood and watched helplessly as it melted off in front of my eyes.

If your normal metal polish won't do it- try this stuff.
www.heavymetalpolish.com (http://www.heavymetalpolish.com)
I use the ultra-fine polish stuff on my rims and all my polished aluminum stuff- It is MUCH better than any normal "paste" type polish because it actaully has some abrasive to it to get the corrosion off.

Don't use this stuff on chrome chrome though- it will scratch it. Works wonders on aluminum and non-plated metals.
