Rebuilding my first big block. I pulled the pan and saw some metal that had been intentionaly melted into a circular cut-out of the front most crank throw as if for balancing purposes. I know that 454 cranks are externally balanced at the balancer and flexplate (th400) so what could this be?

The crank was balanced and they used a welder to add some metal to the counter weight.
