Does anyone here know why my AM Radio tone knob for my 1970 Monte Carlo will not snap on..it seems that the knob is not deep enough because the knob goes on perfectly when the radio is not mounted. anybody got a clue?

Either you have the wrong knob or the shafts aren't coming through the mounting holes far enough.

Are the knobs and inner tone knobs the same on a monte carlo and chevelle in 1970?

Whoa, there's a big difference! As Team Chevelle's radio guy, let me explain...

1970 "inner" knobs such as the tone control are actually in 2 groups. Malibu style sweep dash inner radio knobs DO NOT INTERCHANGE with SS type dashes or in your case the Monte Carlo dash. SS style dashboards/Monte dashboards have a different spacing. These require a knob that looks the same but in reality has longer plastic piece in the shaft part.

Therefore, you probably have a "Malibu type knob" and of course it isn't "reaching".

This has confused many people. Hope this helps.

Joe

Coppertop you are brilliant. This is most likely my problem. Thank you very much for taking the time to help a Monte Carlo guy. By the way, check out my Monte Carlo website at www.members.carol.net/kevinwiles/monte.htm
