Is there a way to tell what size ring gear a person has without tearing apart a rear? It's a 68 El Camino with a 10 bolt open diff. I want to upgrade to a posi, but I've heard that an upgrade with the existing rear isn't possible if the ring gear is an 8.2. I was hoping that maybe through the rear end codes or something that it would specify. TIA

Amanda, If it is an original rear end it is an 8.2. If for some reason you find out it is an 8.5, I'll make you a good deal on a posi carrier I bought that won't fit my 8.2.

Amanda, there were factory posi units made for your stock 8.2" 10 bolt axle. Those may be real hard to find in good conditions Auburn and others still make posi units for that rear end.
