My friend has a SBC 400 that he wants to unload. The number stamped on it is T0528CSU and is a 74 motor. I am just curious what the HP rating is.

Thanks in advance.

The 74 SB400s were ONLY available with a 2bl. A 400 w/4bl was first available in 75. As mentioned above, ONLY one hp rating was available. If this is a true 74 engine (the 528 indicates an assembly date of May 28), it will be a good base to start with, especially if the heads are in good shape (74 was the LAST year for good SB heads). Also, it WILL be a 2 bolt block.
On the top of the bell housing flange, at the rear of the block, is a CASTING date. This is the date the block was actually cast in the mold. It will start with a letter for the month (A thru L), then a number for the day and another number for the year. For example, since the engine was assembled May 28, then a casting date could be something like E244 (or E2474).
If you weren't so far away, I'd really be interested in it.

DZAUTO & Jay72,
Thanks foo the reply. It is indeed a 74 motor as the casting date on the block is C 27 74. The heads are 882's and have a casting date of K 7 3 and K 2 3. My friend is wanting to trade me the motor and some money for a 402 that I have. I am playing with the idea of building the 400 and put it into a S10 or a 84 Z28 that I have.

Thanks again,
