the car starts easy, stays running for about 5minutes, but then it starts to sputter and then dies. thats at idle

if it happens while im driving, it'll stay on while im giving it gas, but once i come to a stop it dies.

im pretty sure my thermostat was broken, just took it out and replaced it, waiting for gaskets to seal.

think it was overheating or just timing?

Why don't you think that you are too lean? It sounds to me like the enrichment from your choke helps you while cold, but when the choke shuts off youare going lean and dying.

not much information. do you have guages or lights? a lean condition will surley make them run hot, as bob said. what degree thermostat are you running? is the fan in good shape. is this a new condition? did you change the timing, lots of stuff can cause overheating IF that's what's wrong. john
