: Odd stalling problem happening more often

This has happened a few times and it's getting more numerous. Occasionally like at idle or moving slow in traffic she'll just sputter and quit, just like if it ran out of gas. After parking and turning it over a few times she'll start back up and I have to rev it some, can't let off the pedal until it's running. Here's what has happened so far:
1)I was pulling into a parking lot downhill a little and it stalled and I had to coast into a spot.
2)I was going downhill in stop and go traffic, and it stalled and I had to coast into a parking lot on the side, give it gas and turn it over for 30 seconds and it ran.
3)I started it up once, warm, and tried to drive off and it was sputtering the more I gave it gas- like it was choking and then it stalled out.
I think the idle speed could use a little raising but this is something else. There's also an annoying hesitation when going from a stop. It bogs for a second then goes. Runs fine once at speed. Car has new fuel pump, plugs (not wires though), rebuilt HEI distrib, alternator, fuel pump and in-carb fuel filter, all new. Any ideas? I was told to check the float levels- or a needle was sticking. I have no idea what I'm looking at when it comes to the carb though. It's been rebuilt not too long ago from the looks of it. Thanks.

Shawn,if your choke is not sticking partially closed just after warmup then i would definately look into your float level adjustment, possible dirt in the carb causing the needle not to seat flooding the carb, and or maybe a bad float that is filled with fuel and sinking which can happen once in a while causing the carb to flood.

If your not familiar with carbs (esp if you have a q-jet) take it to a reputable carb rbld'r to get if
fixed correctly. If it's in fact flooding over you dont want to drive it much more becasue you will foul your plugs, waste fuel, and take the risk of starting a fire if it backfires through the carb when trying to start the motor after it floods and stalls.

You dont mention your getting any smell or fuel odor when the car stalls which would happen if your flooded so just a long shot but are you running the stock points ignition? If yes then check your points out to make sure they are not pitted and or out of dwell which should be set to approx 30deg +- 2 deg. I have seen times when the rubbing block on the points is worn down enough that when the motor is at low speeds it will stall so check this out before you pull the carb off for a rbld.

Do you have an HEI dist.
if so the module may be bad and will completely fail sooner or later if so

Check the fuel pump .
Email me with more details and i'll try to help you out the best i can here from philly

i took a look at your site and i have a couple questions
how long did the gas sit in the tank of the camino ?
did you remove the carb when you painted the engine ...replaced with a new gasket ? if you did
did you put a fuel filter on it since you bought the car
and is there a new fuel pump on it
were the fuel lines flushed
lets start from there

It's been a long time since I bought it so that gas that used to be in there is all burned off, and there was hardly anything in it at that point anyway. I changed the filter recently (switched from external to internal but will be switching back soon again), had the lines replaced, and I repainted the heads and water pump (not the intake, it's aluminum)with the motor in the car (just a cosmetic thing). I removed the valve covers and painted them separately. There is a new fuel pump, but even with the old one it still had that hesitation on acceleration. I do have an HEI distrib and had it go bad on me already. I had it completely rebuilt in November 2001 so it should still be fine. The hesitation was before that as well.
