I need some help. What years were the old canister type oil filters used. I bought a block code 3914660-( I think this is a 1968 327ci right?)- that has no screw on plate for a spin on oil filter on the engine. Does this engine take a canister type? If so there is no by-pass valve assembly on the engine either. Do I need to get a canister & valve assembly (which seems pretty hard to find) or just a newer type spin on type part to bolt to this block? Thanks!

I converted my 327 from canister to spin on. Just buy the conversion kit. They come with either of two nipple sizes, get the kit with the nipple size that matches the filter you want to run.

My 1966 283 had a canister filter. I bought the conversion kit for 12 dollars. Best thing you could do, I hate those canister filters.

BJ,
The last year for the canister filter was 67 models. Possibly your spin-on adapter was just removed from the block before you got it. If in fact your engine is a 68 model, all you need is the adapter valve and 2 bolts for a 68-later engine (they're a dime a dozen, all the same, and there should be 8 bazillion of them out there).
