: 01 silverado 6 in 5.3 out

i was wondering what year 6 liter i need to look for to replace the5.3 in my 01 silverado.i know the reluctor tooth count is an issue.how late can i go?

i think it was around 04 and back-when they switched the cam sensor to the front, i think they went to the 52 tooth-i know my 04 was 24
i'l have to dig thru my stuff to come u with an exact year

That is exactly where compatibility is based is tooth count and location of the cam/crank sensors. I am on board with you on the 04 changover and I confirmed it on Mitchell on demand.

OP, it looks like as long as you find an 03 or older 6.0, it is literally a bolt in. Every nut bolt and sensor will plug in and if I am not mistaken, no computer changes are needed. The duty cycle of the injectors will be a touch higher to keep the O2s happy.

ya, the 04-05 was a changeover period, some 04's were cable throttle bodies, some were drive by wire-diff vec. got diff change over years
my 04 shortblock went to diff length headbolts, when i built my stroker to replace it, i had to order diff headstuds for the older block
the LS 2 was what they called it when it changed to 58 rel.-then it went crazy from there, lol
the sensors are diff colors so you can tell if its for a 24 or 58

Do these motors have some kind of numbers badging that will let us know what they came out of...like the old SBC and BBC.

I know where the numbers are on the heads like "243" and "317."

Is there a site like MORTEC for these motors?

The 24x was still around in some applications as late as '07.

If you have cathedral port heads which came on the LS2/LQ4/LQ9 (not the late L92/LS3 square ports) the 5.3 intake and TB will swap on. LQ4/LQ9 are 317 casting. 243 on the LS2. They are very close to the same design but the 317s have larger chambers.

LS2s are aluminum block 6.0s and they came with 24x and 58x reluctor wheels.

Obviously the cam sensor can be changed easier, the reluctor is tacked to the crank. Lingenfelter does make a conversion box if you get the wrong version but I'd prefer to have the correct sensors on the motor, just one less thing to worry about.

The easiest/least expensive 6.0 swap would be a LQ4 or LQ9. Likely '02-'04. I'd stay away from a '01 as piston slap was more common but the motors are still reliable, if you get a smoking deal. The LQ4/LQ9 motors are basically the same but the LQ9 had higher compression pistons. Crank, rods, heads, intake are all the same.

thank you guys, thats what i wanted to know. im sure its possible to install the later model stuff but it probably gets more complicated and the trouble outways the benefits. a 6.2 with l92 heads would be nice though.i kow ill have to do some tuning anyway which is fine. so ill look for an 03 or earlier.as far as the cam sensor location. is it as simple as installing the old style sensor in the block or do you use the late cam sensor and modify the harness?do both sensors generate the same signals? thanks again

From the post the person from Lingenfelter made on LS1tech you could get a 6.0 from an '06 or '07 as long it is your body style and swap it in and it should have the 24x reluctor wheel.

I understood the cam sensor changed with or after the 58x reluctor wheel on the crank. From what I've read it should be a relatively easy swap of the timing chain sprocket, cover and sensor.

I would consider swapping over to a 4L80E and just picking up a take out engine/trans from a junk yard. If you're lucky maybe even grab the electric fans to replace your clutch fan. Search efans on performancetrucks I had a few posts asking about them using the same screenname. The 4L80E does require some wiring work.

If you want to play around some, you could pick up a 6.0 shortblock, and swap on your 5.3 top end. To get some extra power send the heads to http://www.totalengineairflow.com/ for a stg 1.5 port job and a mild cam. TEA typically makes very good torque The 5.3 heads actually flow very well ported and have smaller chambers for higher compression than even the 243s on the LS2/LS6. 243s can be picked up for $400 and flow well too.

FWIW I got my 5.3 out of a 2003 suburban and it did not have a front cam sensor. Just had the crank sensor above the starter. So I agree that as long as it is 2003 or newer you should be fine. However, if you can look at the engine, just verify that you cannot see the front cam sensor.
