I have been reading these hv oilpump v stock pump arguments and am wondering what you guys suggest; 454 max rpm about 6500, have mildon pick up, milidon solid windage tray, milidon pan baffle, milidon 7 qt oil pan. I think i will go with a stock pump but thought i would check first, also since the pickup has the bolt on bracket, does it still need to be tack welded? also is tack welding basically spot welding? THanks!

I would use a stock pump for your application.

A stock pump will be fine..just make sure the main bearings aren't 360* grooved.

Stock pump & I always tack weld them even with that little bolt on bracket. I have had found the bracket broken on more than one when freshening engines. I just use a mig (wire)welder & tack weld a couple of little spots. That way the pump won't get hot.

I prefer the stock style round pickup over the aftermarket design.
I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but as long as your rod, and main bearing clearances are within GM's specs (per overhaul manual), and your rod side clearance is reasonable, you won't have any problems. Don't take anything for granted. Measure everything.

I have to agree with Mike 100% on the pickup if it fits your pan configuration use it. The design of the stock type pickup like melling is just so much better than those cheesy little aftermarket pickups that any time they will work I use them. Still tack weld em or put a setscrew in though. :D

I have a 454 with the same pan, a stock pickup and a high volume pump. I turned 6500 the other day and did not loose any pressure, (like in running the pan dry). I don't think the high volume pump is needed. I have had good luck with them. With the seven quart pan you could go ether way and be fine. I would weld the pick up with out the spring and just tacking it is fine. I found the stock pick to work good for me.
