Does the engine have to be pulled to replace the stock oil pan on a 67?

In general, Yes...

I have heard of some people getting pans out, but mostly small blocks, but trying to put it back in would be even harder then getting it out...

Even if it could be done in the car, the trans/flywheel would have to be off and the engine raised off the mounts, to slide it back enough to clear the cross-member and oil pump pickup/baffles...

Dale, have a pan swap coming up over the winter, and just cant see how you'd R&R it without the motor being raised a bit. Even as much as 2" should do it to clear the throws. Anyway, planning on raising it myself, havent thought about how exactly, likely a lift as opposed to jacked from under the motor mounts.

Had to pull my motor to do the change.

Dale, that engine has to come out! There is just no way to do it in the car. Some have said a SB can be done in a car, but I don't know how that is possible. I tried. No Go. rb6667

This is not what I'm wanting to hear but thanks for the headsup. Looks like I won't even try it. :(

It's been 15 years or more since I did it. I have a big block '67. I removed the 4-speed and bellhouseing w/flywheel. I supported the rear of the engine with a pipe across the fender and a chain bolted to the back of the engine. I think I jacked it up and put 2x4's under the mounts or something to that effect. But it CAN be done.

I did it. I don't have any of my front clip on which increases the accessability.
I just undid the engine mounting bolts, took off the fan shroud, put a jack under the oil
pan, raised it enough to put 2 1x2 3/8 pieces of wood and I had lots of space. I am also
using studs instead of pan bolts which makes it easier. To lower it I used my shop crane to decrease the chance of crushing the gasket.

The thing that sucks for me is I have to take the engine out for the 6th time in 6 months because I found out my oil leak is from a bad oil pan. I have to change the pickup in the oil pump to use the new pan. Unfortunately I bought the pan from a suspect EBay seller so who knows how long it will take to get here.
