: replace rear main seal or not

I picked up a "running" BB, and I want to drop it in my car.

Is it worth replacing the rear mail seal, or will I run into problems?

The oil pan was already removed, so I have to pull and replace that gasket anyway. I figured I could just pul the rear main cap off and replace the seal and then reinstall...

Any comments/suggestions?

Tony,
I'd replace it. It'll take tops 15 minutes to do and you'll know it's done right and you'll be starting fresh. You really don't know if the one that's in there leaks currently. It would totally SUCK to start the motor and have it leak. On top of that it'll be a ton more work to fix if you wait to find out after it's in the car. Cheap preventative insurance. Do it now while it's easy.

While you are at it & the torque whench is out, I would pull all the main caps & take a look at the bearings... As always, just my .02

Better to do it now than to wish you had done it later.

Replace it, and I have another vote for checking the mains out too while you are in there smile.gif
