: Tidying up the classifieds...??
hoffbug Feb 4th, 12, 9:55 AM Was browsing the "free" classifieds and was surprised to see all of the old, seemingly unattended, ads still in there..
Just throwing an idea out to maybe help tidy things up a bit in there
I think an ad should get 3 months .. when its about to expire an e-mail goes out with the option to extend another 3 and if it isnt responded to it gets zapped.. Only one "e-mail" renewal allowed.. after that the ad would need to be placed by the seller again.
TCSS1970 Feb 4th, 12, 12:10 PM Your idea get my vote.
Mods can't modify/clean up the classifieds so posting here doesn't do much.
You need to contact the site Administrator (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/member.php?u=53044).

Just trying to vet the idea here first.. If it sounds good perhaps the mods could suggest it to the powers that be?
There are ads in there that no-one ever responds to questions and e-mails.. I guess if someone cant renew via e-mail twice a year and replace the ad twice a year.. they most likely wont respond to questions or e-mails from potential buyers.. Craigslist and E-bay have figured it out... They have a fairly quick expiration time on ads simply because it keeps people coming back knowing they arent wasting their time on something already sold or something that someone has left unattended.
You'll get a better response than we as Mods would for something that only the Admin can control.
Like I said - PM Cayne ,our Admin.
FYI ,Verticlescope runs on corporate hours 8-5 M-F so don't expect anything until Monday at least.
hoffbug Feb 4th, 12, 2:17 PM OK. I sent a message linked to this thread
I just now deleted an old want ad from May 2009 to see if I still could.
Isn't Jim North in charge of those ads?
PM me how you did it Dean.
I tried a couple times but no luck.
I just looked for an OLD ad and clicked on the "delete" box
I'm in on this ad - http://www.chevelles.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=7774&cat=6
And don't have a delete box.
And Yes ,Jim's (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/member.php?u=8673) still showing for the 'supporting member classifieds' but don't know if that covers the 'free classifieds'.
Hmm, so you don't have a delete button on that ad like I do hu?
Apparently not.
I think you and Tom have different permissions than the rest of us.
nanya nanya nanya :D
I knew that I had deleted a couple in the past (very few spam type)
I think Tom has access to the admin CP
I tried going in with the Mod CP but still no delete.
Interesting discovery.
I'm not sure that I would want to be the one to decide which ads stay and which ads get deleted.
I guess maybe someone should come up with an ad age...poof
So your not volunteering ? :D
Yeah, that's why I posted Cayne's contact info ,I'd let him make the call.
blacknblue Feb 4th, 12, 4:28 PM Can someone at least delete the "featured photo" classifieds that say SOLD? At least it's clear that the item is no longer for sale.

It's pretty clear because you can't click on it to see its description or contact info. But I do think we should still delete them along with other ads that are over 3 months old.
It would make sense that the OP would be able to delete their own ad but have seen some that just forget about it after the sale.
There's no 'report post' type button so the powers that be can be notified so a post can be deleted.
Troy & Jay ,send a PM to Admin as I posted.
The more that send in about the issue the more likely it'll get some attention.
Oh yeah, I do know that I can't do anything at all with the paid for - image ads.
Lets discuss it in our back room
Thanks Tony
hoffbug Feb 4th, 12, 4:58 PM Thanks Guys.
I think what Ive suggested is fair.. There has to be some way or software to automate it.
1. When ad is placed gets 3 months.
2. After 3 months an e-mail option to renew is sent out.. If it isnt responded to in x amount of time ad disappears...
3. If ads are renewed.. they get another 3 months. after which time they disappear and an e-mail is sent to the person placing the ad letting them know it expired.... at which time they could create a "new" ad... and the process starts at square one again.
