I've been thinking of buying the new 572 from GM to put in my 72, but know it is a raised deck design. How does that affect header fitment, if i were to buy regular headers for a big block? Is the block that much taller that I have to worry? Do manufacturers make headers for a tall deck? Or do I have to have them custom made?
Thanks in advance,
John

It actually might make it better, depending on the headers.

why would this make it better? I was planning on running Hooker Super Comps. My only real concern is the steering shaft on the drivers side, I know it might be tight around there.
Anyone else?

I am running hooker headers and on my 72 BBC, i had to ding the headers in certain spots to clear the control arms etc. I also had to relocate my proportioning vlv. So that was my thought.

protouring72,
The tall deck 572 has decks that are 0.4" taller perpendicular to the bore , the result is that headers will sit roughly 0.3" taller than on a standard deck. They would also sit 0.3" wider ( closer to the fenders, a-arms and steering gear)You'd have have to check to see if the added height and width would help, or hinder you. The other problem is that the headers get closer to the floorboards, on some cars, such asa Camaro or Firebirds, the header flanges can hit here. A lot depends on the make of the headers, some will fit better than others.
AFAIK, no one makes an off the shelf header for tall deck blocks, you'd have to go to Lemons or Headers by Ed, or others if you run into fitment problems, but make sure you bring a big wallet. Of course, you already have that if you've got a 572. :D

thanks guys,
I've been doing more and more research, and will probably be going with a 540. Little less complicated, and cheaper to boot!

The 540 will probably be a tall deck. Do not forget if you get after market heads like Dart they will have raised exhaust ports. I have 572's and have been thinking about putting one in the chevelle and the headers that I found are Sanderson headers. They are $285 and ceramic coated are $435. I would call them a 3/4 length header. They make them for custom rods. Hope this helps.
