i once read that the LS6 was way underrated in the hp department due to the insureance companies. i am in a heated discussion with some people weather or not this is true. i once read that a LS6 really put down over 500hp. help me out here.

I've always thought that most of the hp ratings were pretty close with the exception of the L-88 and the L-78.
The 427 L-88 was rated 430HP and probably had closer to 530 than 430. There was a car magazine that dynoed an L-88 and it was in the 525-550 range.
The 396/375HP L-78 is probably shy about 50 ponies. This engine was put in the Vette with a 425HP rating. Most will agree that is has closer to 425 than 375. You gotta remember the L-78 was basically an LS-6 with about 60 less cubes.

I have never had an insurance agent ask me what the horsepower rating was on my engines. Not even the cubic inches, just V-8 or 6cyl. Just my .02

They dont have to ask anymore its all in the vin number. Any hi performance car I have owned I have been asked the advertised HP rating, not saying I didnt tell them it was a 325HP 396 when in realality it was an L78 but they dont need to know that....

The still-born LS-7 was probably the baddest engine that wasn't built up to a full house race motors be it MOPAR Hemi or FOMOCO, Cammer and Shotgun!!
That still-born "B/S", (for "ball-stud"), Hemi was probably the best made for the time!!! IMHO... At least the FOMOCO Cammer and the Shotgun were sold!!!
And I am not trying to start anything here.... pdq67
