do all of the big block oil pans fit all of the big block engines. 396, 454, 502 gen v ??? i have a 454 engine in a 69 chevelle and i'm interested in using a 5 quart pan instead of the 4 quart from the factory. any suggestions?
thanks john

The Gen 5/6 engine uses a one-piece rear main seal. therefore, the pan is not interchangable with the MK IV.
The factory 5 qt ('Vette) pan will not fit the Chevelle chassis. You'll need an aftermarket pan.

ok here's where i plead ignorance. is the gen 5/6 and the mk 4 all 454 engines? if that's the case i need a mk 4 due to the gasket configuration?
Moroso has a lot of pan for the big block but it always refers to gen or mk engines.

Yes, they "can" all be 454s.
Gen V starting in '91/92 Look for NO mechanical fuel pump on the side of the block, and no hole to put one in.
ALL Mk IV will have a provision for mechanical fuel pump.
There are some Gen V/VI blocks with provision for the mechanical fuel pump, but they are the over-the-counter crate engine or Bowtie blocks, not originally installed in a vehicle by GM.

mine has the mech. fuel pump and fits in my 69 chevelle. it also has "hi performance" casted under the bell housing on the back of the engine. it's a replacement block according to the TRW number stamped on the block.
thanks for your help, john.

Your motor is a gen4 block, 2 piece rear main seal, used from 1965-1990. There are bunch of different aftermarket oil pans for your application.
