I know this has been discussed before, but what is the difference in a 12 bolt for a 1964 to 1967 and a 1968 to 1972. I know the overall length is shorter I believe but am not sure how much. Would a earlier model rear fit a 1970 chevelle?

The 68-72 is ABOUT 1in longer overall. You CAN bolt one or the other in either years, perfect fit. You will just need to to check the offset/clearance of the wheels that you use on the rear. And the same applies for a 10bolt rear.

Duane, 64-67 rearend are 56.5" flange to flange and 60.5" from drum to drum.
68-72 rears are 58.5" flange to flange and 62.5" drum to drum. Yes, the rearend will fit.
