: Vortec Heads- Plugs and Gap
camnick Sep 19th, 04, 1:34 AM I am running Vortec heads with R44TS plugs at .045 . Is there a plug out there that performs better? Should I be running with a larger gap? I am using an ignition box also if that helps. It's running a little rich also. Runs pretty good though.
Thanks
novaderrik Sep 19th, 04, 3:25 AM R44LTS is the plug i run, gapped at .050, i think.
the Vortec heads need the longer seat- that's what the LTS at the end of the part number stands for. the the R44TS you have now are about 1/4" too short, and as such, are not sticking into the chamber very far- if at all.
MAXX2 Sep 19th, 04, 10:34 AM We've used Accel P526S (Shortie) with great results, including 2 full days on the dyno.
No problems whatsoever.
If we add nitrous, then we need to go 2 ranges lower/colder.
Hope this helps.

camnick Sep 19th, 04, 2:24 PM Is there a good place to get the Accel P526S plugs. I looked a couple of places on the net and unless I'm mistaken, I beleive they cost about $12 a piece (Summit). Can I get away with using the P526 instead to save on cost? I think they are only $3.50 a piece.
bored&stroked Sep 19th, 04, 6:20 PM I was running cheapo champions at .060 with a MSD coil and module, just switched to R42LTS's with a .45" gap and am much happier.
I don't know what the proper plug for Vortec heads is but IMO you don't need any more than .035 gap. The more gap you use, the more likely the voltage will find a lesser resistance path to ground before the plug. I don't think you'd be able to detect a performance or mileage difference between .045 and .035. I have an MSD 6AL and run .035 FWIW.

Some others like Scoggin-Dickey or Sallee Chevrolet might sell them for less, or try your local Chevrolet/GM dealer.
Gap for our's is .35
The P526 could work if your headers allow the clearance(s).

Our's is having trouble firing up with our Accel Shorties, so any suggestions? Maybe they are just getting worn out or ????? It's fine once it starts, and the tuner is top notch and runs both the Bonneville and El Mirage events, so we are trying to figure out which plug(s) are correct for our setup.
We ended up with 470 HP @ 6,100 RPM, and feel safe to go to 6,500 +, so it may end up trial and error or ?????

CNC BLOCKS N/E Jan 4th, 05, 1:09 PM We have used the Autolite AR473 or AR474 quite a bit differance on the dyno over the standard type plugs. Don't try to gap them just make sure they are not damaged.

Here's 3 pictures of the difference between the Accel P526S on the right that we are currently running, and a P576S on the left. Note the difference in how much of the plug penetrates thru the heads. Why the radical difference, or ?????

Dave H Jan 4th, 05, 4:52 PM Looks to me like the plug on the left didn't have the "P" in front of the number. ?????? Or did I just miss it. Is "P" for projected tip ? Dave H

Now, why do Vortec Heads need a projected tip?

The recommended plug for the GM H.O. 350/330 Crate Motor we originally bought was AC#43LTS.
Now that it has dynoed at 470+ HP, any thoughts on what heat range we need, or is this always a "Trial And Error" process?
