: Good deal on a Big Block?
MalibuDreamer Nov 25th, 02, 10:07 AM BBC Rebuilt w/ 049/781 Heads (http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=292&p_catid=111&sid=1AlF2z0Wt0L79Vz-52102361903.98)
looks like a real cheap setup especially if it comes with the 049/781 heads. Throw in a cam and put on a nice intake and it would be a decent mild BBC.
whatta you guys think?

If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don't think it necessarily means you're a hard worker. It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance. (Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey)
I would be VERY suspicious of the quality of the work on this motor. VERY suspicious. Most of these high-volume rebuilt/reman places are known for terrible work - like the autozone "cheapo" 400hp small blocks that go 5000 miles.
Either that, or a misprint in the price. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
pdq67 Nov 25th, 02, 8:53 PM You may be better off to pick up a 454 P/U engine as a core and start from there with a good honest Machinist...
And think --- 496!!! If the crank is bad and it needs boring...
Check Competition Products out for good prices on good parts, too if you want to take the time to wade through their on-line cat. pdq67
jcchevelle Nov 25th, 02, 8:54 PM Malibu - We just picked up a 454 with 781 heads for $600. It's a complete engine. We have priced out a good performance Cam, pistons, rings, values, etc plus machine shop work - cleaning - reboring, etc. High performance intake and Carb. The parts alone price out at about $1,500 plus not including shop work and we are doing the work. You might be better off finding a good block and have it reworked. IMO
MalibuDreamer Nov 26th, 02, 11:03 AM Thanks for the input guys -
Rebuilding a truck motor is still high on my option list. But then i will get the urge to build a 496 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
mr 4 speed Nov 26th, 02, 11:22 AM I'm willing to bet its got those cast, flat top "rebuilder" pistons that sit way down in the bore. Not good for compression or performance.Plus, there's a $500 core http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif
Look at it this way, you'd be better off buying a running 454 for the price of the core, and spending the money to build it yourself.I built mine for about $2500,including the block, crank, rods, and heads.

MalibuDreamer Nov 26th, 02, 2:34 PM Chris - as you should know i dont plan on buying this engine, and i hate shipping big things http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
just wanted to know how they could sell that so cheap.
This winter I'll be looking for parts for a 468 or 496 (Im done with small blocks) that will hopefully end up in my malibu, I'll start with the heads first so i can p&p them in the off season and get big valves put in, that should be the most time consuming part. Unfortunately i'll have to bolt it to a TH350 till i get a manual tranny for it.
pdq67 Nov 26th, 02, 11:46 PM I know it's probably cheaper to redo the stock heads you find to use, but Merlin ovals look pretty good cost-wise even though you will need to run an open chambered piston to get good compression over the old closed chambered stock, reworked heads...
And they ARE NEW!!! pdq67
