Need help trying to remove glove box lock and ignition keyswitch. I put a paper clip in tiny hole in ignition lock and turned key to left, unscrewed outer retainer when it got about to the end it stopped. Am I doing something wrong? I dont have a clue on glove box lock. working on a 66 elky any help would be appreciated

For the ignition, you've got to get the lock cylinder completely out before you can unscrew the ring. The book says to "Push in on wire (paper clip) to depress plunger and continue to turn key counter-clockwise until lock cylinder can be removed". Its been a while since I did mine, but I recall that the thing was a gooey mess and that I had to jiggle and fuss with it until the cylinder came out.

As for the glove lock, I believe that the cylinder/latch comes out as a unit from the front. There should be a retaining screw that goes into the back of the lock housing. I don't recall whether you can actually remove the cylinder from the housing, but you can always key the ignition to match the glove.

Hope this helps.

Take a look in the archives;

Also Gene has a good "how to" page on the glove box lock;

I have a 66 Elky myself and have just taken the dash completely out, so I know where you are. To remove the ignition lock you have to first put the key in and push in and turn left to acc. Then insert paper clip in hole, you will feel a small spring loaded pin, Push it in and turn key left, do not push too hard or you will actually hold the lock back by binding the paper clip on the pin. I ended up taking my glove box lock out from the back, because I do not have a key for it. It does have a large allen head shaped retaining ring in the front which must be removed by pushing in the lock. Good luck - Rex
