I have a question? I recently bought a 70 SS chevelle, it has a 69' 427, what I can I look for that might tell me that it has been rebuilt other than the great orange paint job, with overspray (that adds a nice touch graemlins/clonk.gif ) an Moroso goop on it, is there any tell tail signs that I can look for????
Not sure if there is, but thought you guys are the experts!!

If it's a 69(34 yrs old) odds are it has been rebuilt, maybe a couple of times. See if it has silicone on both ends of the intake. If so you know the intake has at least been off.

Check the pistons. Most of what I have seen in a rebuilt motor usually says like .030 on the pistons. Also, on the main bearing it sometimes says wether they are oversize or not.

Got a goofy question for you, did you bother to ask the person who sold it to you if it was rebuilt? and or who & where? Just working the simple things out 1st!

No way to tell, when I got my car I pulled the motor out to freshen up the engine bay.. While it was out, I pulled the pan to inspect the bottom end. Everything LOOKED freshley rebuilt, I put it all back together, repainted it & drove it for about a year..
About a year later I decided to pull the motor again for verious reasons, this time I decided to pull one of the main caps to inspect the bearing.. It was worn through the copper!! I came quickly to the realization that I was in for a complete rebuild..
As I started tearing the short block down, I found 2 rings that were broaken, & one piston that came out in about 4 pieces, keep in mind, there were NO visable signs of wear in the cylenders at all.. That motor was probably one good rev away from being toast....
Sorry to ramble, but the point of the story is that even with the pan off, you can't always tell what kind of shape the motor is in..
