The mediums go in the rocker boxes at the ends, Long are the rest of the rocker box bolts. Short along the outside. Torque them in steps, run them all to 25 then go up to the torque value in 10# steps. If you're using shim gaskets go up in 5# steps, that way you don't need to re-torque. Be sure to follow the correct pattern.

Pat's right-on, but I'm anal about shims and torque mine at least three times after she warms and cools... Like driving to work a second and then a third day...

And I do take my headers loose to do it.

Then when done, I start on my header bolts. Some of them take up to 5 or 6 tightenings to finally get tight!!!!

PDQ, I have shims on both engines in my Elkys and have not retorqued them. The 66 has about 80-90,000 miles on them and the 67 has be running on the strip for well over a year. Creeping up on the torque really works smile.gif . Fel-Pro cheapy .018" truck shims on the 66 ($6.36 each), and Victor Nitro .026" shims on the 67.

65mali; As Pat said, torque them in small increments.Use moly lube under the bolt heads, and Permatex #2 non-hardening sealer on the threads.I have found Permatex #2 to be far more lubricious than the ARP teflon sealer, and their moly lube, and more reliable against leaks.I also torque 5 ft. lbs. past recommended specs, and retorque the next morning to 5 past spec.Between the bolts relaxing and the gasket compressing after initial break in and cool down,it will be near spot on.I've never had a leaker yet. graemlins/hurray.gif
