: 454 Vortec?

This is a 3 part question.
I'm building a 57 chevy pro-street themed P.U. and am considering going one of a few ways on the engine trans combo.
My frame has a 67 chevelle front clip on it.

#1 - 454 vortec pulled out of an 99 truck. This engine has 90,00 miles on it so I will have to go through it and freshen/replace what is worn out on it.
On the plus side it has all the accessories and brackets on it.
It also has the multi port FI and comes with the computer to run it.
Is this a decent FI for the street?
Is there a way to tell if it has 4 bolt mains and a forged crank without pulling the pan?
I can get this engine for $1,000.
I would need to get a trans for it, possibly a 4L80.
this seems to be about the most cost effective way to go if the stock FI will make some decent power.

#2 - I can get a 6.0 LS2 out of a 2009 SS Trail Blazer with a 4L60 trans and computers. This is supposed to be a 390 HP motor. Only supposed to have 18,000 miles so it should be good to go.
I will have to change some things to make it fit my frame so that will add to the overall cost.
My biggest concern with this route is if the engine trans isn't what it's purported to be. This could end up being a costly rebuild.

#3 - I have a new 4 bolt 454 bare block that would have to be built from the ground up.

I'm just looking for a cruiser that will have decent power and not brake the bank getting there.
I'm leaning towards the BBs because of all the room in the engine compartment on the truck but the fact the LS 2 has the trans makes it tempting.

Sorry for the long post.
I do appreciate any info I get.

for a cruiser option #2 would be a good choice, do you have access to the vehicle for the other parts needed for the swap??

I haven't had a chance to get over to see that combo yet so I'm not sure if hew still has the rest of the vehicle. The guy selling it says it was a rear end accident and that's why he's selling the engine/trans.
What else will I need from it?

I have a 99 suburban with the 454 vortec in it and while it is a good motor, it is not a huge powerhouse. Only rated 290 hp stock. Not really crazy bbc power, lol. It does have 265k on it though, so it's been good. I think they were all 4 bolt mains, but a 2 bolt main can hold 700+hp; not as big a deal as it is in a sbc. For a project car I'd do the 6.0 if I could get the trans, pcm, accessories and all. Or build a 496 from the bare block.

things like harness, computer ecm, accessories with belts, pump, hydro boost stuff, maybe dash, maybe console, = anything that you may need and somethings that you won't need

454 Vortec is a 4-bolt main factory hydraulic roller block. Most don't have forged cranks. The injection manifold is restricted where the runners cross the top of the intake. PM me and I'll send pics of the mod I did to mine. Don't have it running yet, too dang many projects.
As much as I like big blocks, I'd probably opt for an LS engine, great economy and plenty of power.

Like the others, I vote for option #2. Just makes the most sense for a cruiser on a budget. With the LS2, you are just a cam swap and PCM tune away from 500HP and the overdrive in the 4L60E will be a big help with fuel economy. 20MPG is not out of the question in a truck with the right gears.

Edit: I for got to mention that since the LS2 is an '09, it is drive by wire which means that you could have cruise control as well.

Well here's what I ended up with.
6.0 LS2 with a 4L70 trans.
Only has 18,000 miles.
Has all the accessories, computer and harness.
Now the fun can begin.
I appreciate all the advice you guys gave.

Do yourself a favor and get a full set of factory manuals for the donor vehicle. I usually get mine from Ebay but that can be hit or miss. You can also get them from helminc.com
. Whatever you spend on the manuals will be well worth it. The wiring diagrams alone are invaluable. BTDT
