I have a 402 that I rebuilt and put less tha 10,000 miles on it before I parked it approx. 8 yrs ago. I got it running a few days ago and(first time since parked) it seemed to have alot of blow by but ran good. It didn't have that when i parked it.
What is a good way to get the rings unstuck? Or do the rings need to reseat or needs to be run longer to get the surface rust off the cylinders.
TIA for any input.

Sounds like you need to refresh the engine. I'd put some new rings in it. There's gonna be all kinds of crap running thru that engine anyway from sitting and deposites forming.

Take the plugs out and squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder and turn her over some. Then let her set for a day or two and fire her off!! I bet everything will come unstuck!!

Then drain your oil and fill her up with what you want run and drive her!!!

Been there, done that!!! pdq67

PS., and don't forget to change the filter too....

I just pulled the heads off of a motor that had been sitting for nearly 6 years and there was no surface rust in any of the cylinders, there was some liquid in one of the cylinders, but I think that was due to the fact that it was stored with no carb (open intake)on it and somehow something had gotten into the motor that way. I am no expert, but would think that as long as it was stored complete you should be ok with just doing what pdq67 recommended. Just an experience I had that might relate. Good luck!

Try pouring some Automatic Trans Fluid doun the carb with it running. it will smoke like hell for awhile, but will get the rings unstuck

I just read an article on stuck rings, it's pretty close to what pdq67 said, but here it is anyway: Remove all spark plugs, put a large amount of GM top engine cleaner into all the cylinders and let it sit for at least 4 hours. Then crank the engine -with spark plugs still out- to remove any excess cleaner. Replace the plugs and change oil and filter. Start engine and fluctuate engine rpm's until engine is warmed up. Change oil and filter again and you're done! Hope this helps, Chris

Yes, I would call MMO a "top cylinder oil"!! pdq67

If MMO doesn't free them up it'll take a re-ring. I'd even run it in the gas and oil for a while to help loosen them up. If it's just a stuck ring problem I'm confident the MMO will do the trick.

Mystery oil and ATF will do about the same thing. You can put a quart of ATF in the oil as an option but don't run it too long, maybe a couple of days and run it very easy. If the rings are stuck, that will loosen them up.

I would prob. go with marval oil, but I would bar the engine over by hand a few times and ad more oil as needed, as posted i'd let her sit a day or two, bar her again then crank with no plugs. check oil before starting to make sure you don't have a belly full of light oil good luck,,,
