The HEI needs 12 volts,,,bypass the resistor wire.

HEI needs 12V. If you use the resistor wire, you will only see about 6-7V, which will not turn the car on.

Speaking from experience, the HEI does need all 12V. I used to have a 350 with the orig. points distributor, and I converted to a 402BB and installed a Mallory HEI. Well, I used the same hot lead to the HEI as was used for the points dist, which still had the resistor in series. The car did run, but when driving, I had some SEVERE surges, lost power, and my tach went beserk. I just ran a new power lead completely to the HEI, and have had no more problems since. You could just remove the resistor or run a new lead and upgrade wire gauge like I did. Hope this helps.
