SoCalRat had a question about how to remove the oil cooler on his rat motor from service.

Four bolt blocks have oil line bosses already tapped into the block to run an external cooler, intalling a bypass spring routes the oil away from your filter, through the cooler and back to the filter. Stopping the flow by plugging the line would block the flow path through the filter. Once you remove the bypass spring, the flow path returns to normal.

Small blocks and 2 bolt blocks have no built in provisions for running a cooler and for these an adapter is bolted between the filter and the block. I think the bypass spring is built into the adapter in this case so simply removing the adapter and installing the filter should work.

I know there are many (most) here with better knowledge than me so please correct me if I've
got this wrong.
