is it necessary to go with a bigger(more oil cap)oil pan if you run a hi volume oil pump for a 327 350hp engine?

No, it's not necessary. No need for the hi-volume pump either, but it's a preference thing. I ran one in my 327 only because it came in the kit.

Well, IMHO, my engine was pretty tired after 30,000 miles and I attribute the bearing wear to running a HV oil pump, stock pan, no baffle and 7000 rpm. Stock volume for me now please WITH a deep sump pan.

wagonbgone & 427,

I stand corrected. You had better get a bigger pan if you decide to go with the high volume oil pump. Ran a little experiment today. On my 327, oil pressure starts to DROP @4750 rpm. Went from 55 p.s.i. down to 40 p.s.i.!That is with a high volume pump and stock pan.

Makes me wonder what my oil pressure was yesterday when I had it @ 6250! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

Here's a rule, IF you choose to waste your hp on high volume ALWAYS use a deep sump. ( I chose to waste my money on a deep sump instead!)

Mike, with the stock factory sweep guage, I;d bet my last dollar the sump was dry everytime I took that poor L88 above 6000. Which is ALOT!

Jeffery, you can do it one of two ways. Use a windage tray or use a baffled pan. At least in my bbc application you could not do both. I opted for the baffled pan to help oil control. My last setup, which I consider ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT, was to use a windage tray off the main studs and cut out the pan baffle. WRONG ANSWER!!! For any application, I would always use a baffled pan. Most stock pans are indeed baffled. I would have liked to use a screen type windage tray in my case, just because of the rpms, but the two wouldnt work together.

Even on my admittingly low RPM (4500) BBC I have a 6 quart pan / 1QT in the filter and screen windage tray and a stock pump.Pan capacity is a good thing.Anything that can help keep oil around the pump and pickup seems like a wise investment.

When you're talking about HV pumps for the small block, do you mean the Z-28 type hv small block pump or the big block pump on a small block?

I ask because the machine shop is about done with my 355 and I don't want to make a mistake by pumping the stock pan dry. I've used TRW HV small block pumps in the past with no problem, but this engine's set up to run higher RPM than the others.
