Our '69 el Camino has a '68 engine with block number 3914638. It checks out as a 327 truck engine. Haven't pulled a valve cover yet but the heads do have the 3 bolt holes in the front face. Anyone know anything about these engines? Compression ratio, valve sizes etc. It is stamped CE858741.

C = Chevrolet
E = Engine (T would be trans)
8 = Year of assembly
The rest are assembly sequence numbers for warranty tracking.

Keith, you guys sure like those '69s :D .
As far as the truck 327 (as in pickup 327) they were pretty detuned in that application. Hey, it's a 327 and you could do a lot worse! Compression was 8.5:1. I don't have specifics on the heads but I figure that they must be large chamber heads with 1.94 intake & 1.50 exhausts (pretty standard stuff).
Horsepower and torque figures were given in both Gross and Net flavors in the truck brochures. Yours listed as having 220 gross hp @ 4400 rpm, 177 net @ 4000. Compare that to the early 1st gen Camaro 327 2-barrel at 210 gross h.p. with an 8.75:1 compression (235 gross in the full-size '69 with 9:1 compression).
Torque was listed as 320 lbs./ft. (gross) @ 2800 rpm, 283 net @ 2400 rpm.
The block could have either a small-journal or a large journal crank since it was phased in after the start of production. Most were the large journal. Small journal blocks used forged cranks while the large journal variety used cast cranks, not that there's anything wrong with that. Supposedly all 327s were 2-bolt cap equipped, but sometimes things were done differently in the trucks, especially in medium duty trucks like a 50-series (or Canadian GMC 950 series). BTW, does it still have a bypass hose for the water pump like a big block?

Is it just the CE engine that could be a small journal crank for the 68 327? :confused: I have always been told 68 327s were large journal.This thread has me wondering what engine I have sitting in my shed?Maybe someone can decode this one for me please.Thanks in advance DANO

Also, how do people know what the application an engine was for? Can somebody tell me what this engine came out of?
