: How to delete old pictures (attachements)?
toofastforyou Dec 29th, 11, 12:24 PM Lately, when uploading some pictures (attachements), I noticed that I'm getting near the maximum "MB"s allowed. The "attachement statistics" progression bar is almost full. I tried to delete the oldest pictures ('cause they're of no interest anymore) to make room for newer pictures, but I just can't find out how to do this. It seems that only the two most recent pics are "deleteable", which is the opposite of what I'm trying to do. So my question is: How can I delete the older attachements? and also, if I cannot delete them, what will happen once I'll have uploaded the maximum allowed?
thanks,
Claude. :(
Mike Dec 29th, 11, 1:40 PM From previous posts on this ,you can't delete any and once you reach the limit ,that's it.
Some have used Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/)(is free) when theirs fills.
Until/if the issue's resolved ,your options are to use a photo hosting site.
Keith Tedford Dec 29th, 11, 8:36 PM I've been on here since near the beginning and I filled my quota a couple of years ago. ;)

Really??...Well that sucks...:( Will this problem ever be resolved, or are there some plans to resolve it? I'm also a member on another similar site and you can delete old pictures that aren't necessary anymore to "make room" for newer ones...but by reading Keith's post (where he says "a couple of years ago"), this issue doesn't seem to be a priority on the administrators "things-to-fix" list... too bad because it probably wouldn't be such a big problem to fix/enable!
Claude.
Mike Dec 30th, 11, 12:44 PM PM the Administrator (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/member.php?u=53044) and voice your concern.

I'm not sure why this is such a problem. It was because if a photo was linked to post and the photo was deleted, the post was no good for the people who do use the search.
Simple solution is use a free Photobucket account and link pictures to your hearts desire to add and delete at will. Pretty simple solution.

Dean Dec 30th, 11, 1:39 PM The problem is that when a picture gets deleted from anywhere it often times makes a post useless for someone seeking information later and it has happen more often with pictures hosted on photobucket and other off site hosting servers so photobucket is not the answer either.
The answer to that problem first and foremost is unlimited member's attachment space, plus members learning how to re-use a picture that they already have stored.
People try to upload the same picture that they already have stored and get a message "NOPE, you can't do that" when all they have to do is copy and post the URL of the picture and add the " in front of it and the " behind it.
Mike Dec 30th, 11, 1:54 PM From what I see ,most of the issues with online photo sites is that the user will change servers/internet providers prior to moving his/her pics to the new server.
If you put pics on Photobucket, it's not going away if/when your ISP changes servers or you change ISP's.
That's part of what happened with Tom's pics when he changed ISP's and didn't copy/save the pics prior to changing services.
There may be issues with Photobucket but unless the site just folds ,your pics will be there and accessible to post when/where you want.

Agreed, until something changes here, photobucket is the best work around.
I didn't mean that photobuckt had anything to do with pictures missing from threads, it is the ability people have of being able to delete pictures from wherever they were hosted, which they do but can not do if hosted as attachments here.
Another thing for the administrators to think about is people hot linking to ebay and the pictures getting thousands of hits per hour but I assume they probably already have that covered. (not that it's any of my business, but I remember when that did happen one time a long time ago.)
Mike Dec 30th, 11, 6:33 PM Probably a discussion for the back room but don't know how much unlimited attachment space Verticlescope is willing to give to non-team members.
Thought they got 0.5mb while Premium & Lifetime got 10mb as shown on the join page (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/register.php).
Claude ,how much total space are you showing?
toofastforyou Dec 31st, 11, 1:53 AM Claude ,how much total space are you showing?
It says that I'm "currently using 4.91 MB to store 99 uploaded attachements". Not sure exactly what that means, but by looking at the "progress bar", it's pretty obvious that there isn't much "space" left! ...and I became a member last July, shortly after I bought my Chevelle!
Too bad that I cannot delete some of them because quite often, after a certain subject has been discussed, the pictures aren't needed anymore, become useless...BUT... they cannot be deleted.
Claude. :(
Alan F Dec 31st, 11, 9:53 AM I have managed my Attachments in the past. I am also disappointed that you can't continue to do so. Yes I have Showroom space that I can use, but I get to manage those. What's the difference if I link to pics in my Showroom and delete those later? Attachments are so much more simple to use. Maybe it's possible but I don't know how to re-link to an existing Attachment.
Everyone wants to see pictures and using Attachments is the easiest way to get them. Once we max out our personal quota of Attachments, we will be less likely to post them if more difficult which IMO erodes the quality of the site. I am already mindful of hoarding the quota I have left.
Lastly, I don't have and don't want another online hosting area like Photobucket. Just something else to keep up with. Please let us manage our own Attachments again OR give us an unlimited quota.

Becoming a paid member should double your allotted storage space and reducing the file size of pictures before uploading helps immensely also. (Most people try to upload BIG pictures and big pictures have big file sizes.)
I've been here since day 1 and using 3.82 MB
It says:
You are currently using 3.82 MB to store 89 uploaded attachments.
Mike Dec 31st, 11, 12:21 PM As I said in post 5 of this thread ,PM Cayne and see if he's willing to make your suggested changes.

I'm guessing that you don't have to say it twice :D
Nothing wrong with discussing these things in public for other folks to be able to take advantage of information they might be wondering about.
Apparently I just said it four times ;)
I doubt you'll get a bigger file capacity without upgrading the membership but it wouldn't hurt to be able to delete those that are no longer relevant in the current file.
LevonH Jan 1st, 12, 2:49 PM This issue was discussed at our last Moderator/Vertical Scope conf. call. I'll send Cayne this note to verify that the limits were increased as this was the agreed upon action:
• Regarding the size of storage of attachments, since some have reached their limit, an option is that we will double the limit for now and also increase the limit for paying and lifetime members.
No sizes were mentioned but it appears that it has not yet been updated????
I added to your note to Cayne about the lack of deletion capability ,but that might come under the same legality as hard deletions from the forums.

Levon, is there a reason why the administrators (or site owners I dunno) seem to refuse to allow the non-paying regular members to delete their old, no longer needed posts? They've become obsolete and are of no use to anyone anymore...
I'm not asking to double the limit :noway: but just the ability to remove the old ones to be able to replace them with newer, more useful ones! :noway: ...seems easy to understand, no?...
Claude. :(
I touched on that in post #20.
Was a time when users could hard delete their post but due to legal issues now you can only soft delete your stuff.
What that means is that the Mods/Admins can still view what was there but it's not open to the public.
If that's the case here ,you could only soft delete and that wouldn't gain any space.
Let's see what Cayne come up with.

No threads/posts to refer back to what all was said.
Yeah ,that's why I don't attend.

"Legal issues"??...sorry, but not sure I understand......What does posting something info about Chevelles has to do with the law? I'm asking this because it makes me wonder how do the other similar car-related sites do to allow users to delete their attachements and not "break the law"? There must be a way... I'm a member on www.turbobuick.com which is a very similar site and the members can add and delete attachements as needed.
Also, like I said earlier...It's not "more space" or a "limit increase" that's needed but rather the ability to add (no limit) and delete the old posts. This in turn, would "free up" some previously occupied space for newer more usefull attachements.
Claude. :clonk:
I have no idea about legal stuff  but I do know it is pretty frustrating for someone to do a search for information and find an old thread that DID HAVE what they need then to find it has been deleted by someone.

Like I said ,let's see what Cayne has regarding this.
Deleting your old pics would also make anywhere you posted them somewhat useless.
As it was explained to me ,we can no longer physically delete stuff from the site due to legal issues which is why is no longer a working option for the users.
toofastforyou Jan 1st, 12, 4:56 PM Like I said ,let's see what Cayne has regarding this. I Agree. ;)

Deleting your old pics would also make anywhere you posted them somewhat useless. Well...if the pic's become useless over time, chances are that the rest of the post is also useless...:o

If it's "no longer a working option", I don't see how it can be resolved...but oh yeah..."let's wait to hear from Cayne..." ;) :D

and
Well ,no.
Tom had a thread about bellhousings (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142525) that went back to 2006 and he changed servers so the pics that were on the old server were just red x's.
Phillip went back and changed all the pic link url's so the thread was still useful.
As for the working option for deleting your posts, it's still an option in the latest software but not enabled for the legal reason they gave us.

When I first stumbled on this site, I spent many hours reading old threads/tech info, etc., and found it annoying when pics had disappeared. If the pics were originally important to a thread/post, it's pretty likely they are still relevant now.
I started linking my pics through Photobucket when I ran into space issues here, and now that I've got it figured out, it's a snap. I wouldn't do it any other way. :)
toofastforyou Jan 3rd, 12, 3:07 PM Guys, I got good news!...I just received a reply from Cayne to the "pm" I sent him on Jan 1st, and I'm happy to say that he took my suggestion into account and has agreed to increase the limit/max of attachements, so that is definitely a step in the right direction! ;) Isn't that a great New Year's gift! :D As for enabling members to delete the attachements, he said that he'd keep that suggestion in mind... (To me that means that it might happen one day if need be).
Thanks again Cayne,
Claude.
What was it increased to?
You had 0.5mb as a non-team member.
As far as I know you still have a limit and lack of deletion.
Honestly ,if I were you ,I'd get the free Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) account so you can add/delete what/when you want and no size limit as far as I know.

Mmmm...I dunno... I just went to check my new attachement "limit" but it seems that it's still the same as before...so I don't understand...

P.S: I "pm"ed Cayne again for a little clarification...

I thought it was 5MB, not .5
He used his space in 5 months so he'll probably be out of space again in May.
I guess increasing non supporting member's storage space takes away a little incentive to become supporting members.
Dean,I'm going by what's posted on the join page (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/register.php) for the sizes.
But from post #5
It says that I'm "currently using 4.91 MB to store 99 uploaded attachements".So I'm not sure what's there.
Guess Cayne's got a plan ;)
I see.
I thought that "showroom space" was something different than "attachment space" and by what he said, he did have 5MB.
[edit] Replies added while I was on the phone
This craptop (belongs to the twin granddaughters) is almost funny, as I type it inserts the letters back up into previously finished words. It takes forever to type a reply when you have to keep editing it. Plus the "7", "8", and "o" key tops are missing.
:D

Claude. ...and why not :clonk: !
Just become a supporting member or use photobucket.
Yeah,just use Photobucket.
