Are you running a BB? If you are you cannot use a regular chevy priming shaft. It will just pour oil down the oil pan and your bottom end, not to your cam and lifters. You have to use an old Distributor pop the top off use the base with 1/2 shaft. You can grind down the shaft to 3/8 on a grinder. The lip on the second step of the distributor seals and gets the oil to the lifters.
SB can use the priming shaft. You will get oil pressure regardless but no to the top this is for BB only. Also turn engine 90 degrees at a time and pr lube so oil goes to all the surfaces. This process takes patience and a very good electric drill or Air Drill with lots of PSI !!
Good luck!!

When you prime an engine, you get oil to the oil pressure sending unit hole in the block quite quickly. To get it to the pushrods takes quite a bit of time. You may also have to rotate the engine to get the oil out of all the pushrods.
