: Cam/lifter break in with EFI

I'm considering the Holley Avenger EFI (throttle body style) when I drop in my recently refreshed small block. New aluminum heads, hydraulic flat tappet cam/lifters, timing set. etc. Nothing radical. I'm concerned that the critical break in for the new setup could be a challenge with a freshly installed EFI setup.
- Does anyone know if the Avenger hand held has an option for a 1st time start up that will keep it over 2000rpm? I'd like to do the EFI conversion while the new engine and new transmission are out of the vehicle and leave the carb under the workbench. In the past I've always used a known trust worthy carb for break in even if I was installing a brand new carb afterward.

YOu just open up the throttles like you would a carb. You will want to have MINIMUM of 18" of pipe after the 02 sensor, so it will keep the AF where it is supposed to be during break in.

That being said, if you are putting it on a stand, it is probably easiest to just put a carb on it, vs fuel return lines, etc, the EFI has to have. Either way isn't a big deal.

I just ran through the set up menu on my EZ-EFI and fired it right up. Did some fine tuning after break in and an oil change. Make sure you use the appropriate break in oil and additives and you should be fine.

Thanks guys. Reassuring to know I can break in the way i'm used to doing it. I was worried the 'self learning' wouldn't agree with with going straight to 2000+ rpm.
Any thoughts on MSD's new Atomic fuel injection? Sound's convenient not having a return line. I have always trusted Holley so I will probably go with the Avenger EFI.

You should have no trouble at all. With no load on an engine it is nearly impossible to damage it from too lean a mixture at break-in RPM's. The only thing you need to worry about is running so rich that you wash the oil off the cylinder walls and that requires a whole lot of fuel and black smoke.
