I am a Pontiac guy and have gotten tons of good info from the brakes and suspension area for my GTO.

My 85 dually (48k miles) has a 454 in it. I bought it only a few months ago. Looks like it has all the original tune up parts in it. I drive it a few times a week to the dump and home depot. The engine gives off fumes and is noticeable in the cabin. Has that smell of oil. The valve cover gaskets are leaking that is visible. But what else might cause this PCV valve etc etc?

FYI, it has the dual AIR pumps and all the smog equipment, along with the Stainless manifolds with all the AIR fittings. All this stuff is in place and unaltered.

BTW, can all this smog stuff be removed and still have the engine run properly?

if the valve covers are leaking, and running onto the exaust. i'd fix this first, on a warrant job I fix all the leaks. on non warranty or my stuff, I fix the big leaks first and work my way down to seeping gskts. if it smells in the cab, it's a leak you can find. 85 and removing smog ? can't help. don't know if the ecm would derate the engine or not.
