Hi guys, Happy Holidays to all... What identifiers should I be looking for to tell if a 69 Chevelle is a true COPO car. Engine ID stampings on the engine pad? Cowl tag? and so on. I know No SS or 396 badging. Thanks.

Your best bet is to check the SYC web site. they specialize in the COPOs and/or Super cars. Alot of great info shared there as well. They also have some of the VIN lists you can check your info against. If you'd like I can check my lists and see if I have any info on the vehicle you are talking about, pm or email me the VIN and/or trim tag info and I can check for you, I don't have everything but a pretty good list of data. hope this helps. Engine stamps; yes (if it's got the original engine it's bound to be known on the COPO site), cowl data tag; yes, but only the paint color code, and the "L" code (on KAN cars, I'm not sure BAL used the "L" code on COPOs) -- provided you believe in the "L" code. DOCUMENTATION, too. "SS" parts on a car that never had SS396 markings.

Unless it's got a recorded COPO VIN, a COPO car that lacks the engine, docs, etc., is just another Malibu...

No new info... I was contacted to appraise 12 to 14 late 60's Chevy's. Among the lot is supose to be a COPO. Just learned that one of the attorneys (divorce) has a friend he want's to do the appraisals, so as of now I'm back out of the picture. I'm sure the other atty will not like the "friend" doing the appraisal but that's not for me to worry about. I am a disinterested 3rd party. We'll see if I get another call later on.

As before thanks for the info you guys offered up. I was more interested in the engine pad I.D. to see if it was the correct engine.

Happy Holidays!

That would have been a cool opportunity. A few COPO Chevelles were sold in Ohio.
