back in august i posted a question about my BB402 and the noise it was making from the rockers(like they were all loose). i have been unable to work on my car untill this past week and still have the problem so i asked a mechanic to come look at it. well he came out and readjusted them and we fired it back up and still have the same noise, he says the lifters are pumping down almost as quickly as he is adjusting them. he thinks it may be a bad set of lifters but is unsure and needs to check with the engine builder to confirm. the cam and lifters are the ultradyne 280/288 and were purchased brand new. my question is has anyone ever heard off ALL the lifters not pumping up or whatelse could be the problem? as always any advise and help will be appreciated.

I don't think it is a lifter problem. It is not conceivable that ALL the lifters would be bad. It is always possible that you might get one bad lifter, but not much of a chance that all of them are bad.

EDIT: I think you have a problem in the oil supply system somewhere. Is there a good flow of oil out of the pushrods while the engine is running?

well when we had it running last night it was throwing oil onto the inner fenders so it looks like there is not a problem with the oil supply.

You are right, if it was throwing oil out of the valve covers at all you have plenty of oil going to the top end. I don't know what the problem is.

well i talked to another mechanic that told me i needed long slot rockers with the lift on that cam, currently im running the stock rockers. does anyone have any other suggestions before i go out to but new lifters/rockers?

I know Comp cams seem to have a reputations to be a little noisy because of the aggressive closing ramps. Also, is there any chance you have Rhoads lifters, or bleed down lifters? Is the car fine when it first starts, then gets noisy as the motor warms up and the oil thins?

well i got the cam and lifters from ultradyne, i called them and they were checking to see if these were indeed the fast bleed lifters but have not heard back from them. and no it makes the noise from the time you start it up. as i see it it could only be either the lifters or possibly the rocker arms but am not sure, i guess ill just have to buy some new lifters and try that but it just seems to be a waste since the lifters i have are brand new.

Well, if it sounds fine when it's first started then I would have to guess you have bleed down lifters. The Rhoads I am running on a CC XE274 Cam sound perfect when the truck is first started. Vacum is about 10" Then as the oil warms up it thins out and the lifters start to bleed. The motor sounds like a solid cam motor, but vacum goes up to around 14".

So I guess the next question would be, does the vacum change as the motor warms up? If it does then I would have to say you definetly have fast bleed lifters.
