Do the piston rings need to be oriented a certain way, or am I ok as long as they are on opposite sides of the piston??

TIA,
Scott

Ive always put mine in the way chevy shows in their manual, this is for gap. Make sure you follow ring manufactuor order for top and 2nd ring placement.

You should follow the instructions that come with the rings. In general, you should space the gaps and avoid the areas under the piston pin.

Thank you for the info, I don't have the directions, I am re-rebuilding this engine because of a cam failure, just couldn't remember how I put them in the last time(last fall) graemlins/clonk.gif

TIA,
Scott Scott,
No big deal.
Put the oil ring expander on & hold the ends with you thumb, install the rails about 90 degrees on either side of the gap.
You can "sprial" these on.
Put the top & second ring 180 degrees away from each other. I put them at the top & bottom of the piston.
Never "sprial" the top & second rings onto the piston.
I put the part of the ring that is 180 from the gap in the groove & use my thumbs to spread the ring just enough to install it but have been doing this a long time.
Best to use a ring expander, it's safer & not near as hard on the fingers :D
In operation they do not stay where you put them anyway so an exact position during assembly is really not all that important.
