I finally finished it up. Thanks to everyone who helped. There's nothing like the roar of the that solid roller! :D I can't wait to put it in the car!

Here it is sitting on my homemade engine test stand in the garage, waiting for me:

I fired it up last Saturday. That was a great feeling! It was worth all the graemlins/angry.gif and bloody knuckles.

I just really like the stock look but wanted a little more than what a 396/454 could offer. ;) What can I say?

Again, a big thanks to EVERYONE on here!

I wanted it to look stock at first glance, although if you take a closer look you can see that it isn't (Merlin III block, AFR heads, Stewart pump, etc.). Still fun!

Ben, did you use roller rockers? any problem with clearing the valve covers? I will be usung Comp pro magnum rockers. I just saw this thread and have the EXACT same sneaky plan for my new motor! Stealth intake, AFR's, solid roller, except mine will be 489" and 396/350 hp stickers. :D

They are stock valve covers with Earls reusable valve cover gaskets. Maybe a little thicker than the stock type ones? These are the only valve cover gaskets I've ever used on my engines. Makes for easy on and off of the covers. My solid roller cam has .666 lift and there are no clearance issues. These are AFR 315 heads. I had thought about badging it up as a 396/350 since my car had A/C, but I couldn't bring myself to paint that pretty aluminum intake. Maybe later on! Good luck with yours. If you have any questions, fire away.

That's what I thought at first, but I then thought "stats" was for numbers. Here you go:

Shafiroff 540 shortblock:
-Merlin III block
-Eagle forged crank
-Eagle H-beam rods with L19 rod bolts
-SRP forged pistons (10:1 CR)
-Speed Pro file fit rings
AFR 315cc CNC ported heads-Rectangular port
Weiand Stealth intake--to clear factory CI
Comp Cams 11-773-8 solid roller cam: .660/.666, 254/260 @ .050, 110 lobe sep.
Comp Cams springs
Comp Cams pushrods--custom length
Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller lifters
Isky Red Zone Marathon solid roller lifters
Pertronix billet distributor (for that stock look)
BG Race Demon 1000cfm carb-GC
Hooker-Jet Hot 2" primary headers
Moroso kicked out pan

I think that covers most of it.

Ben, I've been considering a similar setup (for a 489), but I didn't think that the Pro-Mag rockers would fit under the stock type valve covers. Did you have to modify the covers at all? Also, how do you think the dual plane will do RPM-wise with that big motor? Thanks, Kirk

Hey Ben, if you ever grow tired of that motor and feel like giving it away, I'm just a hop, skip, and a jump away ;) tongue.gif :D

I did no modifications to the valve covers. I've run the motor with no problems.

As far as the manifold goes, ideally I should have gone with a single plane, but I wanted to have factory CI and was worried about hood clearance. I'm not sure what will happen RPM-wise, but I don't think I'll be losing that much power--hopefully!
