Rob,
Could you be more specific? What type of 350 short block, 2 or 4 bolt. What sort of price range, etc. I would imagine that you will get more responses that way. While I am answering, the GM "Target" short blocks are still available. The company my brother works for buys them to put into all of their trucks. He says that they have never had any problems getting 150K plus miles out of these engines.

Good Point Tim,
I was cosidering a Goodwrench 350 for 1299, and then throwing out the heads and cam. But then I thought I could get a sturdy shortblock for a few hundred less.
I am looking for a 4 bolt, but would consider a two bolt if the price is good. Flat top pistions to achieve 9-10:1 CR with 64cc heads. I plan on an XE268 cam with vortec heads. It would be a mild build for use up to 5500 rpm max.
Putting it in a 68 wagon, 2004r and 3:55 gears.
I'm sure a stock stly rebuild with flattop pistons would be perfect, otherwise I'll just wind up with the Goodwrench crate motor.

Rob,
Somebody here recently built a flat-top 350 with Vortec heads and a short cam like that, he was posting about having a terrible time with it pinging real bad. I'd recommend you go for dished pistons if using a 64cc head, get it down near 9:1 with iron heads. Flattops and 64cc could end up around 10.25:1, which is going to be tough with iron heads and a short cam.

If you are going with vortecs, why not just get an HO ($2200). You get 1-piece rear main seal with the HO. target has the old leaky 2-piece.
